We love Katacoda!
Let me say this loud and clear: we (Team Killer) think Katacoda changed the landscape of interactive learning for good and in an incredible amazing way! Katacoda showed us that the way to go is to have easy accessible in-browser environments.
Why is the original idea of Katacoda so amazing?
Katacoda allows you to just open the browser and get a terminal to a Linux machine or even a whole Kubernetes cluster.
This reduces time and complexity for local setups by a lot. The environments are disposable, so you can just reload your browser and get a new one. Because of this Katacoda is really famous amongst students of Linux or Kubernetes based technologies.
Why do we need an alternative?
Since Katacoda has been bought by O’reilly, things have changed quite a bit. It looks like O’reilly wants to transform Katacoda and the underlying technology into it’s own platform. No one really knows what’s coming, but it seems like it’ll be much less open.
Using Katacoda today has some disadvantages:
- Outdated environments (old Kubernetes for example)
- Not actively developed, no new features
- Long startup and load times
- Outdated or broken scenarios
- No embedding possible for Business/Professional usage
Killercoda to the rescue?
Well let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, Killercoda is still in a quite early stage and still in BETA. But what’s already possible is:

- Create new scenarios
